Garage

Dear Reader,

There is only one task that fills me with more dread than going to the dentist or shopping and that is retrieving something from the garage. It wasn't always like this...

I started with good intentions. Never before had I had such a huge space to store stuff. The idea of putting a car in there never even crossed my mind. I put up shelves, which were then filled with stuff. The stuff was in boxes and the boxes were labelled, so I knew what stuff was in what box. As time wore on new things were acquired, which replaced older things, which were put in the garage. These things were too big for shelves and so the floor of the garage began to fill up too.

The dream garage
Spin forward to the present. Now, opening the garage door could potentially trigger an avalanche of stuff. There is a way of narrowing down where a given item may be, much like the pattern of rings you find in the trunk of a tree. Simply put, the closer to the door a thing is, the more recent is the addition to the health and safety hazard that is our garage.

Th reality garage
The Dear Lady Wife knows little of this, because the garage is not attached to the house. It is a short walk away from the house. I am sent to the garage to get things like Christmas decorations. If I have not returned within 24 hours the emergency services are alerted.

We will be moving house soon, I am going to have to do something about this. If there is one task that fills me with more dread than finding something in the garage, it is finding everything in the garage and doing something with it.

Interestingly, I have a small shed at the bottom of the garden. It is like the garage but in microcosm. Initially there were good intentions and shelves. Now there is a small, but ever present danger to life and limb. At least I am consistent.

There is a proverb which says "the road to hell is paved with good intentions". I wonder if it has been adequately shelved...

Tomorrow is Sunday, which means we all get a break from my alphabetical journey. More on Monday, the home of the letter H. On that note Happy holidays Dear Reader

xx

  2. oooooooo yes I know this effect very well I am still putting up shelves, I have a small corner not yet filled with them.

I was a bit worried because the little icon showed the perfect garage and I thought WHAT? HOW? but now I know that is a set up to make us all buy shelves, PHEW. I did once go to a house that had a garage that looked like that; it even had a special easy clean rubber floor. But I think he was a strange compulsive cleaner and arranger of neat rows and did little else.

    1. Fear not, the perfect garage does not belong to me.

I don't see walls, I see shelving opportunities

  5. We have three outbuildings very much like your second example. And a crawlspace, and a spare room. We can never move. I'm trying to visit all the A-Z Challenge Blogs this month.

  6. The dream garage looks just like my dads garage. So not fair! He is Mr. Organized and Mr. Clean all in one. Mine is somewhere in between. It starts to get bad and I start cleaning it out. Drives me crazy. Why does it have to be so hard to keep it clean?

  9. I wish I had a garage. One of my sons asked if he could store a few things in a spare bedroom at my house. A few weeks ago I went in to look for something. It looks like a storage unit. So am figuring I should charge him rent on it. When I tell him that, he will get it all out!
